- Drawbacks: They’re much heavier than aluminum, which reduces fuel efficiency and payload capacity (heavier frame means less payload on the same axles)
- Maintenance: Galvanized steel requires minimal maintenance as it resists rust well over time and strengthens over time as it oxidises.
- Budget: Galvanized trailers are usually slightly cheaper than aluminum frame trailers
- Ideal For: Commercial and personal applications where durability and heavy-duty performance are top priorities.
Aluminum Trailers
- Strengths: Lightweight, rust-resistant, and easy to tow, aluminum trailers work well for light-duty or recreational use.
- Drawbacks: Aluminum is more delicate with heavy loads. At Flatbed Central, we limit aluminum trailers to GVWRs under 10,000 lbs to prevent potential damage.
- Maintenance: Aluminum benefits from protective coatings and a lighter load to preserve its structure over time.
- Budget: While often more expensive than galvanized steel initially, aluminum trailers will save on fuel due to their lower weight.
- Ideal For: Light-duty towing, personal or recreational hauling, and those seeking fuel efficiency.
Enclosed Cargo Trailers: Why We Offer Only Aluminum Frames
For enclosed cargo trailers, Flatbed Central offers only aluminum-framed models. When aluminum skin is applied to steel frames, galvanic corrosion can occur, which may eat holes in the trailer’s sides over time. Aluminum frames eliminate this risk and provide ample durability for lighter loads, making them an ideal choice for enclosed trailers. Furthermore, there are currently no large-scale manufacturers producing galvanized-framed cargo trailers.
